How to change Steam wallet currency

Changing your currency for your Steam wallet could come in handy, especially if you trade many games and items within Steam. That would allow you to see the price of your items in different currencies which could be beneficial. However, Steam doesn’t let you do this. Your Steam wallet currency depends on your country. The only way you may be able to change your Steam wallet currency without physically moving is to use a VPN. However, this also comes with some issues that need considering.

If you have moved to a new country, but your Steam location has not changed, then your Steam wallet currency will also be unchanged. To fix this, please follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to Steam Support.
  2. Go to ‘My Account.’
  3. Click on ‘Manage Account Details.’
  4. Select ‘Update Store Country.’
  5. Choose your country of residence.
  6. Enter your billing details.
  7. Click on ‘Apply country change.’

Moving to a new location

As explained earlier, the only way you can change your Steam wallet is by changing your store location, and the only way you can change your store location is by physically relocating. Steam uses your IP address to determine your geographic position.

If you have moved to a new country or are living abroad for an extended period, you can update your Steam store location. Steam will allow you to choose from your current and original locations. Once you complete your first purchase using a payment method from your new location, it will set this as your store location.

When you buy a game and go to checkout, you can select the country where you are currently located on the cart page. For example, suppose you’ve recently moved from Germany to the United States. Choosing the United States will update your cart, pricing, and payment method options. After you’ve completed your purchase using US currency, Steam will update your store country to the United States.

Traveling to a different country

The ability to change your store location does not apply if you are only visiting a different country. It’s not possible to temporarily change your store region to make purchases while traveling. You have to be in the new location for an extended time before you can change your location.

In addition, if you are a new Steam user and want to make a purchase while traveling, you must return to your country of residence before setting up your store country. Steam suggests setting up your account and your store region before traveling, so you can see the store in your country’s prices and be able to make purchases.

Using a VPN

One possible way to change your Steam store location and Steam wallet currency is by using a VPN to change the IP address on your computer. Although this may seem straightforward, there are several things to consider before taking this approach.

  • You can only change your store region once every three months. Steam has restricted users from changing their store region too often, as it’s easy to find better game deals when doing this.
  • You will need a billing address from that region. A VPN may work, but you’ll need friends willing to share their addresses and zip codes.
  • If you want to change your location to Russia, you’ll need to use a Russian credit card. Some games are up to 80-90% cheaper in Russia than everywhere else. To prevent users from taking advantage of this, users will likely get banned from Steam if they don’t use a Russian credit card.
